Newspapers and their dates – Alabama

While working with the Google News Archive collection you will have to be careful to pay attention to the date that appears on the scan title and the date that appears on actual newspaper. The following case will show you what to look for.

I was doing some genealogy research and came across a Newspaper that was titled April 19, 1986 and I noticed that there were 70 pages in the scan.

01 - Apr 20 1986 - Front Page of Alabama newspaper

70 pages on the scan tells me that this is a very thick newspaper or the scan contains several days of newspapers under the same scan title of “Gadaden Times Apr 19, 1986”.

Since I was looking for a particular obituary I looked for the Obit section in the newspaper and found it on page 3 of 70.

02 - Apr 19 1986 - Obit pg 3 of 70

I wanted to know if there were other sections that might contain genealogy information so I paged through the 70 pages and on page 17 of 70 I found another Obit section and noticed that it was for Apr 20, 1986.

03 - Apr 20 1986 - Obit pg 17 of 70

So I was looking at a scanned newspaper that contained more than one day’s issue. I paged through the full 70 pages and found that it contained the thick Sunday issue with many sales pages and Radio/TV pages but no more Obit sections.

It tuns out that Apr 19, 1986 scan of newspaper contain the Saturday and Sunday edition of the the Gadsden Times.

I returned to page 3 of 70 and copied the names in the Obit section:

As I worked on page 17 I noticed that on the next page there were more interesting sections and so I captured that page; page 18 of 70.

06 - Apr 20 1986 - other items in Alabama newspaper

I did not record the names from this section but noted that there were many other names that could benefit someones genealogy research.

Now that you know there might be two (2) or more news issues in a scanned collection you will pay more attention to the page numbers and review the whole newspaper even after you have found the item you were looking for.

I hope this has given you a new insight into working with the Google News Archive collection.

Thank You

Jose from Clarkston, Michigan

Retired General Motors designer who now works on subjects dealing with genealogy. I create trees using items I find in old Google News Archive newspapers and I contact other tree owners notifying them about the news item concerning their relative and send them a link to the tree I created. I post a screen print of the news item on the tree for others to copy, so that my work will benefit others. Occasionally, I will post about the tree I created or the item that I found, always with a "how to" in-bedded in the post. I want my blog posts to help others with their family trees or with their genealogy experiences.
