While at the GFO (Genealogical Forum of Oregon) this past Oct/Nov 2017, I came across a copy of “The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Volume 148, Number 3, July 2017” in a “Free” stack of duplicate journals. I brought it home and created trees for the family lines in the six articles of the magazine.
I wanted to capture the main subject of the piece and give the viewer of the tree a hint of what was in the article. In each one of the six tree files I put a scan of the front and back covers of the magazine.

I also included a scan of the index which shows the title and author of the piece.
I scanned the first and sometimes second page of the article and the last and sometimes the next to the last page. I placed all these scans in the gallery of the profile page of the home person. In this way I gave the viewer of the tree, a taste of what was available but did not give away all the content of the magazine, thus requiring the view to contact “The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record” for the full article. It is a win-win for viewer and magazine; the viewer gets some info and the magazine gets new subscribers or at least new hits on their web site.
Below are the tree names and links to tree; notice that they do not follow the name of the index title. The reason for this title difference is that some of the articles are continuations of earlier articles and I do not have the information for the subject of the piece, I only have info on the later descendants
Trees created to hold parts of each of the NY Gen Record articles; names and links of trees.

Whenever I create a tree from some newspaper or magazine article, I always collect all the last names that are found on the tree and put them in a file for future reference. This allows me to easily include the last names in a query. It also allows me to compile a list of all the surnames on all the 1000+ trees which I can use to compare for possible tree lines connections.
Thus here are the names that can be found on the six NY Gen Record trees.
Names on all trees: Amerman, Baar, Badie, DeGrove, De Voe, Holmes, Lane, McIntyre, Quackenbush, Quakkenbosch, Theale, Van De Werken, Van der Beek

I hope this blog post has helped you in finding info about your relatives. If you did not have relatives in the six articles, you may have benefited by learning about a New York magazine that is available to you the genealogist. You also may have gotten an idea for your own blog post; how to easily capture the many names in articles found in magazines or old newspapers. In any case I hope you enjoyed the post.
Thank You.
