Newspaper Dates | Names in newspapers

When working with old newspapers in Google News Archive list, Enhanced Archive Newspaper List with Locations, or the Table of States you must pay attention to the dates that appear on the title of the photo copy and the dates that appear on the actual newspaper.

It was pointed out by my good friend Shannon that one of the posting here on the Blog read 1794 instead of 1974. I reassured her that I was aware of the error and that the error was on the newspaper as well as on the title of the photocopy; I simply captured the screen that contained those dates.

A similar thing happens on the following newspaper, but in this case it was the poor quality of the print which made an 1898 newspaper issue look like an 1808 newspaper issue and the people who made the photocopy did not catch the error.

When trying to find a home (family tree) for an item in an old newspaper it is helpful if the names of the people are something other than John, Mary, James or Ann. The last names help of course but when the last names are Smith, Jones, Williams or Miller it is difficult to find good matches for the people much less good homes for the item where they are mentioned. That is why I liked the following marriage certificate announcement. I thought that it would be easy to find these couples on existing family trees.

Elkanah Blois and Lillian Poler
John H. Grave and Mary Pogue
John G. Jury and Maud Agnes Green
Everhard V. C. Wolters and Josephine C. Schnittspan
Salvaro Santilippo and Catherine Sunzieri

 
As you can see the names are quite unique but even then without more information it was difficult to find homes (family trees) for all of the couples. Out of the seven couples I was only able to find homes (family trees) for three of them; Antone Krilanovich and Marcy Feitcich, Elkanah Blois and Lillian Poler, and John H. Grave and Mary Pogue. I was amazed that I was able to find six trees with the John and Mary but maybe the combination of Grave and Pogue was unique. Perhaps the other four couples with distinctive names are on some family trees but the tree owners have misspelled their names. Or the newspaper account is wrong and the family trees have the correct names of the couples.

For Antone and Marcy I found two trees. For Elkanah and Lillian I found thirteen trees and as I mentioned above for John and Mary I found six trees.

Now that I will feature this 1898 marriage certificate announcement here on this Blog, maybe someone will recognize the other couples and give the item a home.

 
I found this particular news item back in March of 2012 when I was just getting started in documenting stories from the old newspapers so I had not refined my methods of recording the news item, link and family trees so I do not have a link to the trees in this particular text file. Now when I create a text file for a newspaper item I follow a strict method of separation of the information and I include a link to the family trees I find.
