The Google News Archive list is very useful but needed to be enhanced by adding the name of country or state where the newspaper was published.
I completed that task of adding the name of where the newspaper was published. The Name of my chart is: Enhanced News Archive List with Locations
NOTE: you must open/save Enhanced files using: Microsoft Office Word 97 – 2003
That being done, I thought that people may want to see only the newspapers published in the United States, so I once again reworked the chart. The Enhanced News Archive chart contained 2440 newspapers, and more than half were newspapers published in Canada and other countries, so I removed all those foreign newspapers from chart.
Since the Google News Archive and my Enhanced list were arranged in alphabetical order by name of newspaper I thought it would be useful to arrange the newspapers by state so I created a new chart which has only the newspapers published in The United States and arranged by State. Table of States 2
I also added a navigation tool at the top of the chart, so that people would not have to scroll through the long chart. The names of the fifty (50) States plus DC are on top of the chart so you can pick the name of the State you want to see and you will be taken to the collection of newspapers from that State.
I included the number of newspapers available for each state and a “Back to Top” button on each of the individual States collections, so you can quickly go back to the top.

I hope you will find this chart useful for your searches of news stories about your family tree ancestors.

This is very helpful information and I appreciate the great time and effort I know that you put into it. I am the webmaster of the Online Historical Newspapers site (https://sites.google.com/site/onlinenewspapersite/), and I have slowly been adding links to these Google papers.
I was able to download your Table of States 2, but the link to Enhanced News Archive List with Locations seems to be a blank web page. Can you help me out?

Try this link. You will be at a page where the table can be open or saved. It is not as nice looking as the USA only chart but it does have the locations to all newspapers. The Canadian newspapers only have possible locations, that is I did not look for a town but only put the region. I plan to go back and update those locations but it is way down the road.

I have been going back to the tables and fixing some errors so when you download it you are getting something that will be changed over time.

Miriam, I went into your site and think that it will be very helpful for users. In my Enhanced list there are lots of newspapers from Mexico and other countries. You will notice that I have put an extra letter next to the name of some of the newspapers. (F, S, G, P) and those designate French, Spanish, German, Polish. Mark, I checked it out and the first issues they have on Google News Archive for the Chronicle Aug 1883 thru Mar 1884 are Knoxville, Tenn. but then they have a big gap until Dec 1894 where it is the Paterson, New Jersey Chronicle and all the rest are this New Jersey paper. Good Catch. Thanks again.

I still cannot open this with any word program. Microsoft Word makes it look like a bunch of text mashed together like potatoes and gravy.
Not to be rude but how can you release such a broken product? I’d rather deal with Windows 8! LOL
AnchangelMichael2, the document is in a Microsoft Word document; in .doc format, not .docx. It’s an older version of Word. If you have Microsoft Word 2007 or newer, you will need to open it using the option of Microsoft Word 97-2003.
Thank You miriam for answering the question archangelmichael2 had about the use of the file. I have not been working on the blog for some time so didn’t pay attention to the comments. I would log on to the blog, post something then leave the blog.
I got an e-mail from another user about the format of the file so I came back in here to take a look at the file. Yep, one must open it with the OLD version of MS Word. I will have to redo it some day using a new version of MS but for now I will update the file and state right on the blog that one must open it using: Microsoft Office Word 97 – 2003.

Is there anyway to pursue Google into reopening this project to expand their papers again?
I find it funny how they even started this project if they were only going to abandon it? I mean what was the purpose of it? Did they knot like the people they hired?
wonder if perhaps they found out all the people they hired had felony convictions?
Why did they make this project so hard to find in the first place if they wanted ad revenue?
When will I ever shut up?

It truly makes my jaw drop at all the *positive* comments even though the enhanced newspaper document cannot be used by anything.
Is this some kind of joke? Or is this some kind of conspiracy against me?
I got this e-mail from MrData1:
“You’re list is fake. All I get is a word document and when opened on Microsoft Word it is a bunch of HTML text. In other words FAIL!!! I guess it’s back to the drawing board! The OPs question still remains unanswered.”
I sent him this reply:
“I am old school and created the file in an old version of MS Word. Microsoft Office Word 97 – 2003 Document. 1.50MB”

I wish I had more up to date software so that users would not have problems with my work. I will continue looking at how to improve the files in my work, but giving you the type of MS Word file to use to open the file, might help you for now.
I actually wounded up doing it the hard way because I don’t want to pay 200$ for Microsoft Office.
Good try though to do it but most people don’t have Office unless they are in a business.
Could you try to use a more friendly format like Adobe where it’s a PDF?

FYI, I went to the Google News Archive a couple of days ago and noticed that The Miami News is no longer showing up there. Not sure if others are gone as well. Sent Google a message via Twitter but haven’t heard back. Will advise.

The good news is that Google has once again started working with their data base and perhaps they will be fixing the problems we’ve had with some of the newspapers.
